All lesson plans are outlines for the class in question, they will be adapted for the ability and desires of the student. Students are responsible for practicing what they learned after the class is over and throughout the week.

Lesson Six: Test with Different Distances

  1. 10 to 15 minutes: Warm up the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, back and body. Simple movements to get ready to shoot.

The rest of the session will be used to shoot at targets placed at different distances. Right hand for the first 15 arrows. Left hand for the next 15. We will continue shooting this way until the hour is done. Bull’s eyes will be recorded, and the student will leave with a list of what was learned during the last six classes. Students will receive their shooting discount for seven days after the lesson.

Archery is a workout. It involves repetitive motion and includes the pulling of bow multiple times, even a 22# draw weight can become heavy. Students will also walk between 10 and 15 yards to retrieve their arrows after shooting three. Dress in comfortable clothes that fit well.

Arm guards and gloves are available for use should the student need them. Getting an archer’s tattoo, when the string hits the elbow or forearm and leaves a red mark or bruise, or blisters is no fun and may hamper future shooting possibilities. Please be aware of your body and your limitations.

If you aren’t feeling well, please stay home. We can provide you with a make-up class, or classes, at some point in the future when you are healthy. Your health is more important than making it to archery class. Just call us and let us know that you won’t make it in. Thank you.

Jason Versus the Imps

An archery poem

Impish teeth in impish smiles
Hide impish evils and impish wiles.

Against the imps stands just one man.
It’s Jason versus the impish clan.

Into the fray with bow and arrow,
The path he walks: straight and narrow.

In uncounted numbers, the imps amass
Jeering and slobbering and cursing and crass.

With gnashing of teeth and blood red eyes,
The imps unfurl wings and take to the skies.

Jason surveys the scene, no fear does he show,
Nocks an arrow and raises his bow.

The first arrow loosed with an aim that is true;
The first imp falls; Jason nocks anew.

The arrows come fast. The imps uncowed.
They dodge and weave and shout out loud.

They dive at the man with bow and arrow
Brandishing hammers, screams chilling marrow.

Jason undaunted wields his bow;
Under his arrows fall many a foe.

Still, the numbers start to tell.
In the distance, he hears a death knell.

The imps, in a fury, come ever faster.
They have a sense of impending disaster.

Arrows take out more of the clan.
Still, the imps attack the one, lone man.

Weary of the fight, Jason carries on.
There is no quit when facing wrong.

With strength of soul, mind, and will,
The imps are turned back; destiny fulfilled.

Lesson Five: Trying out stances

  1. 10 to 15 minutes: Warm up the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, back and body. Simple movements to get ready to shoot.

The rest of the session will be used to explore different stances using both hands.

  • 10 to 15 minutes: One leg.
  • 10 to 15 minutes: Kneeling.
  • 10 to 15 minutes: Sitting.
  • We may try other stances time permitting.

Lesson Four: Working with Arrows

  • 10 to 15 minutes: Warm up the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, back and body. Simple movements to get ready to shoot.

The rest of the session will be used to explore techniques related to loading the arrow on the bow while not looking at the arrow as much as possible.

  • 10 to 15 minutes: Practice dominant hand shooting.
  • 10 to 15 minutes: Practice non-dominant hand.
  • 10 to 20 minutes: Holding the arrows with the bow; we may also explore the use of different quivers.

Lesson Three: Focus on Form

  1. 10 to 15 minutes: Warm up the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, back and body. Simple movements to get ready to shoot.
  2. 10 to 15 minutes: Practice dominant hand shooting.
  3. 10 to 15 minutes: Practice non-dominant hand. Both parts of the session will help find a student’s weakness and work on correcting form.
    1. Feet, knees, hips, shoulders, elbow, look, point, concentrate, anchor point
  4. 10 to 20 minutes: Practice with pointers. Delve deeper into focusing, concentrating, and clearing the mind.

This session will be tailored to the students’ specific needs while providing time to practice and reinforce skills learned over the last two weeks.
