Our short trip to Waikiki was filled with amazing sights, amazing beaches, and amazing food. Several of the experiences in the city stood out: The Top of Waikiki restaurant, expensive and worth it; the malasadas from Leonard’s Bakery, calling them “Portuguese donuts” does not do them justice; and the Honolulu Cookie Company.

This story is brought to you by #CookieSaturday. Part of my family comes from southern Italy, specifically, Sicily. While I never had any plans to go there, when the opportunity presented itself, I jumped at the chance. My first sophomore semester of college I spent in Vienna. A friend and I planned a trip for our two-week fall break. We included Sicily in those plans. When we got to Palermo, we ended up in a street market where they were selling different kinds of cookies by the kilo. I found some that looked like the cookies my grandma made, and I had to have them just too see how close they were to my grandma’s recipe.

As a home tradition inspired by Checkers Penguin, we make cookies every Saturday! To be fair, Jenya makes cookies; I just eat them. Jenya uses a basic cookie recipe and breaks up candy bars to get chocolate chunks. They are always different because she uses different chocolate bars every week. One of the best songs to sing for Cookie Saturday is Sesame Street’s C is for Cookie with Cookie Monster!

Sometime earlier this year, our friend Checkers Penguin and his mom decided to make Cookie Saturday a thing. They baked cookies every Saturday and shared them on Instagram. Even if we couldn’t actually taste them, we could share in the fun and imagine what they tasted like. My wife decided to get in the game and has made Cookie Saturday a thing for us as well. All you need to participate in Cookie Saturday is to know the hashtag (#CookieSaturday) and to make some cookies. Take a photo with your favorite baking companion, and enjoy the cookies.

The Honolulu Cookie Company is almost as ubiquitous as the ABC Stores. While not quite on every block, the stores are spaced out just far enough from each other to provide a nice place to duck inside and grab a sample of their delicious cookies. And they are delicious. The stores are clean and the employees are friendly.
The shortbread cookies with the distinctive pineapple shape come in a variety of flavors that change with the season. Inspired by the islands, pineapple macadamia, white chocolate dipped coconut, and dark chocolate dipped Kona coffee are just a few of the flavors available. At Christmas time, you’ll find white chocolate dipped ginger spice, and peppermint. My favorites were the Kona coffee, and the chocolate dipped triple chocolate macadamia.
So, put your walking shoes on, and head down Waikiki’s main street. Make a game out of collecting cookie samples on the way. Because if you’re looking for a taste of the islands, the Honolulu Cookie Company has you covered.
