In America, you’ve been told that if you work hard, you will succeed, and for most people, that means get rich. However, hard work isn’t the only thing you need. You need to have talent, luck, and to find the right occupation for you. Minimum wage workers have some of the hardest jobs in society. (If you’ve never worked at McDonald’s, you don’t know how difficult that job is, especially if you’re working with a crew of less-than-motivated teens or for a disgruntled, entitled customer.)

Celebrate Failure Like You Celebrate Success
Celebrating success comes easily to Americans. You see professional football players dancing in the end zone, even if their touchdown didn’t mean they won the game. You see confetti pour out of the ceiling at NBA games, even when the team is no longer in the playoff hunt. You get a bonus in your paycheck when the company has a banner year… Well, we can dream that’s what you would get if you were a part of the company’s success, and I’ve heard they do that somewhere. And by all means, celebrate your success! You earned it. However, success isn’t the only thing you should celebrate. You should also celebrate your failure.

I’ve been spending an inordinate amount of time playing Disney Magic Kingdoms. This point and click, timer game with a weak, long play story line puts you in charge of your own Disney Park. It’s amazing. I’ve digitally collected Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Prince Charming, Hamm, Woody, Jessie, and Tinkerbell. I have four parade floats but can use only three of them. I also have Mickey’s Fun Wheel, Pixie Hollow, Mickey and Goofy’s houses, and a couple of concession stands. California Screamin’ was given to me as I cleared away the Disney Park land from the curse Maleficent put it under. I’m at the beginning of the game, so I don’t know what surprises are still in store for me. But I am looking forward to them.

In Mary Holm’s “Rich Enough? A Laid-back Guide for Every Kiwi (affiliate link),” Holm starts off by questioning why people want to get rich. More specifically, she directs the question to the reader: Why would you like more money? The answer may seem like it’s a no-brainer. People want more money, so they can live better and be happier. If that’s true of you, then Holm’s points out that “having more [money] doesn’t necessarily make us happier.” There’s a point, past which more money may even lead to less happiness.
While more money may not lead to more happiness, the opposite seems to be true. More happiness leads to more money. In fact, Nick Powdthavee, author of “The Happiness Equation (affiliate link),” found that happy people were more productive, more creative, healthier, and more likely to become financially successful.
Holm quotes Albert Schweitzer to bolster her point: “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you’re doing, you will be more successful.” Holm doesn’t deny that grumpy people may do well financially, but the money won’t change their disposition. At the end of the day, they will still be grumpy.
Mary Holm is described as “New Zealand’s most trusted money expert.” She has worked as a financial journalist in New Zealand, Australia, and the United States.

New Zealand Director Taika Waititi gave a short talk about creativity at TedxDoha. While his talk may seem like rambling, his insights into creativity are priceless – if you can find them. The month of June is very important to my future success. If you would like to be a part of it, there are five simple things you can do.
- Join my blog’s email notification. (It’s over to the right.) WordPress offers this option for anyone who has a WordPress account, so you’ll need to sign up with them. That ensures that your email isn’t going anywhere else. Alternatively, if you would like to join an actual email list, contact me. I should start one, but I haven’t found a good way to build it, yet.
- Join my Patreon. Even at the lowest level, you get one article a month about creativity, just for you (and all my other Penguinators). Jenya is considering doing a penguin photo a month and putting that in a calendar next year. The digital version would be something that we would give to anyone as well. If you’re coming to my events, Patreon will save you some money at my table!
- Buy my books. They are available on Penguinate.com and on Amazon. If you have Kindle Unlimited, you can also read them there for free.
- Visit my website. Every page view, every reader is important. Visiting my website costs you some time, but hopefully, you’ll gain some information that you really wanted. I focus on creativity, entertainment and travel. In June, there’ll be a lot about what’s going on at different events.
- Spread the word. Sharing is caring. Share a link to my books. Share a blog post you really liked. Share my Patreon page. You can share online with your social media pages and IRL. If you have one of our penguins, we’d love to see his or her adventures.
